Does ATEX Still Apply in the UK?

News/Blog

If you’re working with dust, gases, or vapours that could cause an explosion, you’ve likely heard of ATEX – the European safety standard for explosive atmospheres. But now that the UK has left the EU, does ATEX still matter here?

Yes and here’s why.

The UK enforces ATEX-equivalent safety rules through a regulation called DSEAR, which stands for:

Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 (updated in 2016).

DSEAR covers the same essential areas as ATEX, including:

  • Identifying explosive risks in the workplace

  • Classifying hazardous zones (e.g. for dust or gas)

  • Using the right equipment and protective systems

  • Keeping workers safe

Post-Brexit, nothing has changed for businesses when it comes to explosive atmospheres.

If you’re operating in potentially hazardous environments, you still need to follow the same safety standards—and use properly rated equipment.

At Motion, we supply ATEX-compliant dust extraction systems from Ruwac that meet the required standards under DSEAR.

Whether you’re in the UK or EU, we’ve got you covered.
